Yesterday I went to an event where I met this Indian woman who was a software engineer and I said “wow a software engineer that sounds like a really hard career” she said: “No It’s not as hard as finance trust me, the whole investing thing really scares me.” I said “well do you own any investments at all,” she said no. I said “so not even at your job in like a 401k,” she said, “no, I’m just too afraid and so I just don’t invest at all.”
Then I met another man this week and after I told him that I was a money coach he said: “really do you own investments?” I said yes, spoke about the different accounts I had and he was shocked and impressed “I also own investments, but it’s not too often you hear about people of our color investing especially in this community”.
I know there are a ton of people out there who are afraid of investing their money, but your fear of investing is literally holding your net worth hostage. Saving your money in a savings account that earns 1% interest isn’t going to help you build wealth. It’s not enough you have to find ways to invest your money in places that have a higher interest rate and this is where stocks come into play.
According to cnbc.com
“The average annualized total return for the S&P 500 index over the past 90 years is 9.8 percent.”
9.8 % vs 1% in a savings account over time makes a huge difference on your money.
The reason I was about to have a positive net worth after becoming debt free is my investments they played a huge role in growing my net worth.
Now you guys know I have a ton of blog posts on investing, and a book on investing: Investing for beginners e-book, but there are also so many other great people who also teach you how to invest. Related post: 8 of my favorite Investing Tips
