“You’re right I haven’t worked with someone in your profession before, but no judgement I could still help you reach your money goals.”
This was one of the most interesting 10-minute consultation calls I’ve had and also the first time I’ve turned someone away from working with me one-on-one.
Not because of what her previous profession was, but because since she just left the field she was still figuring out her next steps and didn’t currently have any income coming in.
I tried to brainstorm some new career opportunities for her (Our call lasted about 35 minutes ), but it was really hard for her to grasp starting from the bottom and possibly minimum wage after making thousands of dollars an hour. She still wanted to be her own boss.
Think about it you’ve been accustomed to living a certain way, maybe even having fancy things. It would be like working your corporate salary and then having to go back to your old college job.
She thought that by working with me one-on-one I may be able to motivate her to find a new job faster which would allow her to save money and pay off her credit card debt.
Which may have been true, but everything I teach is surrounded by having income coming in each month.
When I asked her if she had saved any of the money she had earned previously she told me
“No I didn’t, because in my mind it was dirty money, so I just wanted to spend it in order to get rid of it.”
Dirty money, I’ve never thought of this concept before. It confirmed to me just how important your money mindset is. How your thoughts about money really do influence the way you spend it.
If I think that money is dirty then I will never be able to hold on to it. As soon as it enters my hands I will want to get rid of it. Even if consciously I want to save money, or pay off debt, or reach any other goal that a young adult wants to reach.
The thoughts you subconsciously think about money are having an effect on your everyday lives. Could you be subconsciously sabotaging your own progress because of what you secretly think about money? No matter if I’m working with a client one-on-one, or teaching a course I always start with your mindset.
