Coach Floyd sternly told us to take our seats, and stated “Most of you will not graduate. You will end up on drugs, in jail, drop out, pregnant or dead.” I remember looking at the clock; it was almost 9:35 AM. I thought to myself: It is way too early for this. Why is he saying these things? What kind of teacher says this to his students on the first day of school? As the years went on, I realized that Coach Floyd was right. Many students that had been in the same classes as me didn’t make it to graduation; they got caught up in the wrong things. People always say to make sure you do the right thing, and choose the right friends in high school because those friends could have the potential to shape who you are. And now, I agree wholeheartedly with that statement. Drake has a song out called “No New Friends,” but at times getting new friends could be the best decision to make. Not every person that you call your friend is a good influence in your life. Even if you’ve known them since you wore diapers.
Sometimes those same people you used to play with at the playground will have you playing in the playground of mediocrity. If you don’t like the way your friends act or think, or the things they do, then you should change your friends. Certain people can make you stuck and stagnant. Not every person is wise; people have eyes but can’t see.If you see the current friends that you have are headed down the wrong path, you don’t have to follow them. At times we have to love people from a distance. It’s not being fake, it’s being real to yourself. You deserve to have people in your life who are going to lift you up and encourage you. You need positive and powerful friends that help you grow and that are supportive of your goals and dreams. It’s a lot easier to stay where you are than it is to grow. Trust me, it will be worth it in the long run. You all know how much I love Jim Rohn so I will leave you with this quote:
“You must constantly ask yourself these questions: Who am I around? What are they doing to me? What have they got me reading? What have they got me saying? Where do they have me going? What do they have me thinking? And most important, what do they have me becoming? Then ask yourself the big question: Is that okay? Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.”As always, be wise, stay humble and build. Enjoy the rest of your week! Feel free to subscribe on the home page.
